In Edom, a garden is a composition, and it gets read the way art gets read: for proportion, contrast, and the way the eye moves through it. That suits the town, and it suits the lots too, because smaller spaces reward deliberate design. A courtyard garden with the right specimen plant, a border that carries color through three seasons, a path that reveals the yard in stages: these are the moves that make an Edom property feel finished. Red clay and blackland still set the rules for what will grow, and drainage still has to be designed, but the work here is as much editing as planting. That is how we design in Edom.

The design process in Edom
Design starts with a walk of the property: how the sun moves, where water stands or runs when it rains, what the soil is doing, and how the garden gets seen, from the street, from the porch, from the studio window. In a town of visual people, that last part matters: the garden has to work from wherever it is viewed, not just from the front curb.
From there you get a planting plan composed for the property: bed shapes, selections for each exposure, sizes at maturity, and materials for mulch, edging, and hardscape ties. You see the full composition before anything is ordered.
Installation that lasts on heavy soil
Installation is where landscapes succeed or fail. Beds get cut clean, clay and blackland get amended and drainage addressed, and plants go in at the right depth and spacing for their mature size. Mulch goes down to hold moisture without smothering roots. We install trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses, and seasonal color chosen to handle Edom heat, humidity, heavy soil, and the occasional hard freeze: hollies, magnolias, yaupon, crape myrtles where sun allows, sculptural natives, and selections that earn their space in a small garden.
Courtyard gardens and intimate spaces
Small lots and courtyard spaces are their own design discipline: enclosed, close, and read up close. We build them with layered planting, focal points, and paths that give the space rhythm, using containers, specimen plants, and hardscape details that make a modest area feel composed rather than cramped. It is garden-making at the scale the property actually has.
Erosion and drainage planting
Edom’s clay holds water until it does not, and slopes show the result. We address drainage with grading, ground covers, and plantings that hold soil, practical work that protects the property while it looks good doing it.
Gallery and commercial landscapes
Gallery and studio grounds, church grounds, and small commercial properties use landscape design for entries, courtyards, and seasonal color rotations that hold up to visitor traffic. Commercial installs are quoted for durability and low maintenance, and they can be folded into your property contract.
After the install
A garden’s first season is part of the composition. We set watering schedules for the new beds, and clients can pair installation with maintenance so the same crew keeps the picture intact.
