Landscaping at Lake Palestine answers to the water. Shoreline lots sit on clay banks that erode with every heavy rain, septic systems impose setback areas that cannot be planted over or built on, and the whole point of the property is a view that the wrong planting can erase in a season. The local failure mode is the shoreline lot that gets planted like a city yard: foundation shrubs in rows, a strip of turf to the water, and nothing holding the bank, so the view is fine for a year and then the edge starts slumping and soil trails into the lake. Design here works with the water: erosion-control plantings that knit the bank, natives that survive clay and open exposure, and placements that frame the view instead of blocking it.

Design for shoreline conditions
We start with how the lot actually works: where the bank erodes, where water drains, where the septic setbacks are, and where the view needs protecting. The plan places stabilizing plantings first on exposed banks, layers in natives and adapted species for clay soil and open sun, and sites trees where their mature canopy will shade the house without blocking the water view, which usually means limbed up rather than left low.
Erosion-control and buffer planting
The most valuable planting on a lake lot is the one holding the bank together. We install ground covers, shrubs, and deep-rooted species that knit shoreline soil, reduce sediment reaching the water, and need little irrigation once established. Where banks are steep or actively failing, we coordinate with hardscape and retaining work so the fix is structural first, planted second.
Planting and installation
Installation is where designs succeed or quietly die. We amend planting soil so roots establish in clay, set trees and shrubs at correct depth, and build beds with proper edges and mulch that hold moisture and definition. Irrigation is planned at install, including lake-fed systems where the property has one, so new plantings get watered on cycles the soil can absorb.
View-conscious design
At the lake, a landscape’s first job is the view. We prune and select for sight lines, place screening only where privacy is wanted (the road side, usually), and keep the water side open and low so the property reads as a lake place, not a hedge.
Commercial and rental landscaping
For rentals, marinas, and campgrounds, landscaping is part of the guest experience: entries that look sharp, outdoor areas that work, and plantings that survive on a commercial maintenance budget. We design and refresh these properties and coordinate installs with grounds contracts so new plantings join a care schedule from day one.
