Landscape Design & Installation at Lake Cherokee, Texas

Landscaping at Lake Cherokee is woodland work. Loblolly pines shade most lots, dropping litter that acidifies the soil and complicating every planting decision, and pine roots spread shallow and wide, which sets the rules for beds, walls, and anything that digs. The local failure mode is the shade yard planted like a sun yard: sun-loving shrubs in heavy pine soil, fighting for light and losing, replaced every couple of years while the needles keep falling. The right approach reads the lot: acid-tolerant plantings that thrive in the litter and shade, view windows pruned through the pines instead of cleared, and shoreline buffers that hold the bank together. Done well, a Lake Cherokee landscape looks like it belongs on the lake, because it does.

Design for pine shade and acid soil

We start with how the lot actually works: where the light falls, where litter collects, where the bank erodes, where the septic setbacks are, and where the view needs protecting. The plan builds from plants that like this ground: azaleas, hydrangeas, dogwoods, camellias, and native understory species that handle acid soil and dappled light. Beds are placed and sized so they read as intentional woodland landscaping, not a struggle against the pines.

View windows through the pines

Most lake properties want the water visible from the house, and the wrong response is clearing the canopy. We manage views with correct pruning: lifting pine canopies, thinning selectively, and shaping sight lines while keeping the trees healthy and the windbreak intact, so the water opens up without creating a storm hazard or losing the shade that defines the lot.

Shoreline buffers and bank planting

On a lake lot, the bank is the planting that matters most: hold it, and everything else on the property follows. We use ground covers, shrubs, and deep-rooted species to knit the shoreline soil, limit sediment reaching the water, and establish without leaning on irrigation. Where banks are steep or actively failing, we coordinate with hardscape and retaining work so structure comes first and planting second.

Planting and installation

Installation is where designs succeed or quietly die. We amend planting soil for the acid conditions, work around pine roots instead of cutting through them, set trees and shrubs at correct depth, and build beds with proper edges and mulch that hold moisture and definition. Irrigation is planned at install, including lake-fed systems where the property has one.

Commercial and rental landscaping

For rentals and association areas, landscaping is part of the guest and resident experience: entries that look sharp, outdoor areas that work, and plantings that survive on a commercial maintenance budget. We design and refresh these properties and coordinate installs with grounds contracts so new plantings join a care schedule from day one.
